Nick Fairley DT Auburn in the BCS Championship Game against Oregon |
Indeed, over the past 45 NFL Drafts in the Super Bowl era, only 5 Defensive Tackles were chosen as first pick, namely DT Dan Wilkinson of Ohio State in 1994, Steve Emtman of Washington in 1992, Russell Maryland of Miami in 1991 Kenneth Sims of Texas in 1982 and Walt Patulski of Notre Dame in 1972. On its 5
first pick that evolved 44 NFL seasons and combined a single participation a Pro-Bowl, only one, Dan Wilkinson, experienced real success in the league with 385 Tackles, 56.5 Sacks, and 5 interceptions in 12 NFL seasons spent in four different franchises. The other four representing either busts (if Steve Emtman, a real "freak" in the Def Washington, elected to the Hall of Fame, the NCAA in 2006 but only played only 50 games for 134 Tackles, 8 sacks and 1 interception in 5 NFL seasons before retiring through injury in only 27 years ..) is for players with great potential but which never really managed to prove their talent in the NFL.
NFL Coaches and analysts admit that the great physical demand for this position and the obvious lack of talent at other positions in the draft behind the choice of these players first picks. The Carolina Panthers
have never even drafted the DT in the first round, just one second, Kris Jenkins, the 44th selection in the 2001 draft who made six excellent seasons (85 games, 215 tackles, 20.5 sacks and 3 participations in the Pro-Bowl) in North Carolina before being traded to the New York Jets. The Panthers have an obvious need for the position of DT or their rotation this year (Derek Landry, Ed Johnson and Nick Hayden not cumulative only 4 sacks on 31 of the team ..). but the need for other positions is also badly affected. Draft
exceptional to this post last year (5 TD in the first round, Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy 2 and 3) this wine seems a little less well provided with only Fairley, Dareus and Paea who really seem to unanimously.
